The Honey Festival
Honey, the nectar so loved by the gods on Mount Olympus, has always been an important
part of the town's economy. With the help of
the bees themselves, apiculturists manage to obtain a honey of excellent
quality that possesses a great
variety of flavours and fragrances.
Instituted as a "Honey Festival" celebrating our territory’s excellent product,
over the course of the years the celebration
has evolved into a much more wide-ranging festival
that includes other gastronomic products
of the area including olive oil, strawberries,
cheeses, cured meats, bread, desserts and typical
dishes.
Fragrances and tastes come together in an evening that is not just a simple presentation
of products, but a carefully-designed guide
to a discovery of flavours and tried and tested
combinations that not only whet the appetite but
also exalt the olfactory and gustative qualities
of the different types of honey and other products.
The town's gastronomic products are further promoted through the organisation
of cooking competitions.
The festival is not all about food and flavours, however, as the town’s craftsmen
are invited to present their work in the old
town centre, which, for the event, becomes a kind of exhibition space
home to the artistic
endeavours of blacksmiths, carpenters, embroiders,
painters, sculptors and many others.
The festival is an event that should not be missed and San Salvatore di Fitalia
and its people welcomes visitors, showing them
the best of their town and offering an insight
into local gastronomic and artisan life in
a joyful atmosphere sweetened yet further by the
ever present honey...
