The Chestnut Festival

For many years, oaks, cork trees, and chestnuts have been spreading back into areas that were once their natural habitat before the arrival of man. The trees are left to prosper and compete for space in areas that are uncultivable. The chestnut, however, is favoured by the farmers of San Salvatore di Fitalia for one simple reason: its nuts. So important is this fruit, that the town celebrates it in a gastronomic festival, the Sagra della Castagna, held usually in the last week of October.

Music and dancing form a backdrop to the main activity of cooking chestnuts in every conceivable way: simple roasting, with tagliatelle or in a succulent soup with porcini mushrooms. The menu features many other delicacies and the whole meal is finished in style with delicious desserts, whose main ingredients is, obviously, chestnuts.

The joviality and conviviality of the townsfolk and the good food and wine all make for a great party where visitors are the guests of honour.
