A pilgrimage on horseback
Once more San Calogero takes centre stage in the lives of the people of San Salvatore
di Fitalia and the faithful of the Nebrodi.
Corporations and classes of workers have always paid their homage to San Calogero
for his help. In the past numerous farmers
would offer animals in thanks and traditional
"Pilgrimage on Horseback", taking place a week
before the solemn pilgrimage on foot, originates from
this.
A great many riders, belonging to a variety of associations, as well as many
individuals from all over the surrounding area,
meet at the foot of the mountain at "Due Fiumare".
From there they ascend together to the
town where a crowd awaits them. They wind through
the streets on horseback passing in front of the
Sanctuary.
For the occasion, an altar is set up in Piazza San Calogero with the Relic of
the Saint. The mayor greets all, riders and
horses, and the crowd pays homage to the relic and receives the blessing
of the priest.
The ceremony ends with the Anthem of San Calogero played by the town band.
It is a simple but striking ceremony that once more demonstrates the strong link
between the local people and their beloved Saint.
